p.s. To answer your question: I went to End of an Ear but was a bit freaked out by the crowds and live music. I'm used to a certain Saturday afternoon ritual there that does not involve all those people. But I stuck around long enough to buy an old Pet Shop Boys remix ep that ended up being a little disappointing (I love PSB and remixes, I just didn't like these particular ones much) and two Big Star reissues on vinyl that were not at all disappointing.

It really makes sense, in a crummy sort of way, that there are so few women in that documentary. Because so much of record store culture, record collecting, etc. is very man-centric. As a woman with record collecting tendencies, I find I'm often written off by other collector types, clerks at record stores, etc. until I prove I have some cred either in discussions or when my collection is inspected. There are also those macho record store/record collecting rituals where dudes try to one-up each other (and the occasional lady), my favorite examples of which are the who-can-flip-through-the-records-the-fastest contest (which I hate, but if I see a dude trying to start such a contest with me I cannot resist taking the bait) and the I-have-that-too-but-I-got-it-for-fifty-cents conversation.

I should say, though, that my favorite record store, End of an Ear, has nice employees, actually hires women who know about music, and is run by nice men who are not macho wieners. So I don't want to paint all record stores with that brush. Though an actual woman-owned and/or woman-run record store would be such a great thing to have in our city, or anyplace else. I've never knowingly been in one of those.

Wish I had planned to see this, my Mondays are usually overbooked. Lady record store clerks are the hots. Are you thinking about putting any interviews on the blog? Lots of excellent subjects around town...
