So, I’m learning a lot by maintaining this blog. One thing I’ve noticed is that I focus a lot on solo artists, singers, and protagonists. I didn’t really expect this going in, particularly since I don’t necessarily privilege individuals so much in my broader experiences with music culture.
Thus, two things have occured to me. 1) A clear limit or point of contention in collaborative authorship, a term I throw around a lot on here, is when one of the (female) authors is a solo artist. 2) Perhaps I’m unintentionally gendering music culture participants — i.e., bands and groups = male, solo artists and individuals = female. This isn’t an apology — often, with my work, I’m forced to look at individuals because women and girls tend to be isolated from one another. But this is no excuse and I definitely plan on bringing in more instances of grouped collaboration (be it homo- or heterosocial). Suggestions are welcome.
Oh, another issue is whiteness. Don’t a lot of these people seem super-white to you? Again, scarcity of resources explains it and a continued dedication to finding more counterexamples drives me.
For now, I thought I’d rectify at least one issue by emphasizing two band performance clip music videos — one that is all-female, another that is almost-all-female.
